Mutiple Sclerosis.

 Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease. In this disease there is partial destruction of the myelin sheaths around the spinal cord,brain and optic nerve.

In TCM Multiple sclerosis is type of Atrophy syndrome.

There are two basic patterns of this disease:-

1). Damp phlegm with Spleen deficiency. 

Symptoms:- Numbness, heaviness, tingling, Dizziness.

Tongue:- Swollen with teeth Marks and sticky coating.

Pulse:- weak and slippery. 

Treatment: Resolve Dampness and tonify Spleen. 

Commonly used Acupoints: U20,ren12,sp9,sp6,st40.

Ub20 and Ren12 will tonify Spleen. 

Sp9 and Sp6 will resolve Dampness. 

St40 resolve phlegm. 

2). Liver and kidney deficiency:-

Symptoms:- Progressive weakness in legs, weak knees and back, poor memory, Blurred vision, urgency of Urination. 

Treatment:- Tonify Kidney and Liver. 

Commonly used Acupoints:-

K3,Ren4,Ub23, sp6,Liv8,ub18,Si3,Ub62,live,Gb20.

K3,Ren4,Ub23,Sp6 - Tonify Kidney. 

Liv8, Ub18- Tonify Liver.

Si3,Bl62- strengthen the spine.

Liv3,Gb20- Subdue the Liver wind.

AcuPoint categories

 Luo-connecting point:-

There are fifteen Luo-connecting points.

At this point the Luo-connecting channel branches off from the primary channel. 

This point connects Yin-Yang pair of channel. 

Functions:-

- Treat disorder of Yin-Yang pair of channel.

- Disorder along the pathway of Luo-connecting channel. 

- Psychological disorder.

Points are: Li6-lu7, Sj5-P6, Si7-H5, St40-Sp4,21,GB37-liv5, Ub58-K4, Du1-Ren15.

Yuan source points:-

Each 12 paired channel has a yuan source point.

At this point Original Qi surfaces and lingers.

Location: 

On Yin channel- Third most distal point, 

On Yang channel- Fourth most distal point. (Expect- Gallbladder)

Functions:-

The Yin source point on Yin channel tonify Yin organ.

The Yuan source point on Yang channel treat excess condition and expel Dampness. 

Points:- Lu9, Li4,St42,Sp3,H7,Si4,Ub64,k3,P7,Sj4,Gb40,Liv3.

Xi - cleft point:-

At this point the Qi and blood gathers and goes more deeper from the superficial layer of channel.

Functions:

- Treat acute conditions.

- On Yin channel this point treat the blood disorder.

Points:- Lu6,Li7, st34,sp8,H6,Si6,Ub63,K5,P4,Sj7,Gb36,Liv6.

Five shu-transporting point:-

These point are on the every channel. 

1. Jing-well point- 

Location:- On the tip of fingers or toes. It can be the first or last point of the channel. 

Qi emerges at this point, at this point the polarity changes take place.

Clinical uses:- 

-Quickly clear excess from the body.

-Clear heat, restore consciousness.

-Treat upper end of the channel.

-Treat disorder of shen.

-Fullness below the heart.

2. Ying-spring point:-

Location:- It is the second or second last point of the channel. 

Here, Qi slips or glides at this point.

Clinical uses:- 

-Clear heat.

-Treat changes in skin colour or complexion. 

-In the disease of the Yang channel or Yin organ.

3. Shu-Stream point:-

Location:- It is usually the third point or third last point.(Expect Gallbladder)

At this point Qi pours, rushes down.

Clinical uses:- 

- Treat heaviness in the body.

- Pain in the joints.

-Disorder of Yang channel and Yin organ.

4.Jing river point:-

Location:- Between the wrist and elbow or between knee and ankle. 

At jing river point Qi flows like current. 

Clinical uses:- 

-Treat cough, shortness of breath. 

-Disease of sinews and bones. 

-Disease manifest as change of voice.

5. He-sea point:- 

Location:- Near the elbow or knees. 

Here Qi goes deeper into the body.

Clinical uses:- 

-Treat rebellious Qi.

-Disease of the skin. 

-Disorder of Yang organ.

Gall bladder channel.

 Function: 

-Stores bile.

- Maintains the integrity of muscles. 

- Controls the mental activity such as ability to make decisions as well as courage.

Polarity- Yang.

Number of points- 44.

Element- Wood.

Clinical uses:-

- Disorder along the course of channel.

- Disease of ear,neck.

- Mental disorder. 

- Lactation disorder. 

- Pain in gluteal region.

- Paralysis of lower limb. 

- Sciatica. 

- Low backache. 

- Tension in shoulder and Temporal headache. 

- Inability to digest.

- Nausea vomiting. 

- Inability to make decisions. 

Commonly used some Acupoints on Gallbladder channel:-

GB1- Eye concern, headache, facial paralysis. 

GB8-For one sided headache, Exterior wind, Liver Yang rising, wind fire, phlegm in diaphragm and stomach, vertigo, ear disease.

GB12- Insomnia, calm the shen, Mania, liver wind, whiplash. 

GB20- Expels external wind, wind cold(Gb20+lu7+Li4), wind heat(Gb20+Tw5+Li4), pacify internal wind, blood deficiency, any type of headache, whiplash, ear-eye-nose-tongue disorder.

GB21- Lower limb concern, headache, any shoulder concern, dysfunction of uterine bleeding. 

GB25- Mu-front point of Kidney, nephritis, kidney and Spleen yang deficiency,Abdominal distenion. 

GB26- It is part of Dai mai channel, helps to open Dai mai channel, Irregular menstruation, prolapse of uterus, Leucccorrhea.

GB27 and GB28- For inguinal ligament, hernia, External genital concern. 

GB29- Best point for hip pain.

GB30- Sciatica, disorder of hip joint, paralysis of lower extremities. 

GB31- Sciatica, liver wind, paralysis of lower extremities. 

GB34- Influential point of tendon, moves Liver Qi, eliminate damp heat from Gallbladder, hypochondriac pain.

GB37- Night blindness, any eye concern.

GB39- Influential point of bone marrow so it can be use in brain concern, bone joint, paralysis of lower limb.

GB40-Ankle pain, Sciatica, tossing and turning through out night.

GB41- Helps to open Dai mai channel, subdue Liver Yang, local pain, Breast disorders.

GB43- Drain Liver fire.

Large Intestine Channel.

Large intestine-

Polarity- Yang. 

Number of points-20.

Element- Metal.

Function of Large intestine:

- Metabolism of water and excretion of waste.

LI4- Key and command point for head and face, removes heat from the body, best point for pain, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea. 

LI5- Febrile disease, sore throat, local pain,redness with swelling and pain of eyes.

LI11- Clears heat, tennis elbow, arthritis of elbow, paralysis of forearm, skin disease. 

LI15- Disorder of shoulder. 

LI16- Long term shoulder pain, frozen shoulder. 

LI18- Neck pain, sore throat, cough.

LI20- Open up nasal passages, facial paralysis, toothache.

URINARY BLADDER CHANNEL

 Clinical uses:

- Eyes disorders.

- Genito Urinary disorders. 

- Backache. 

- Muscular cramps.

- Controls the fluids circulation. 

Polarity: Yang .

Number of points: 67.

Element: Water.

Commonly used points:- 

UB1: For any eye concern, night blindness, lacrimation. 

UB2: For any eye concern, sinus, nose concern. 

UB7: For any type of nasal obstruction, for allergies, vertex headache.

UB10: Headache, Neck pain.

UB11: Influential point for bone, great point for any bone concern. 

UB12: Eliminate wind, nasal obstruction. 

UB13: Back shu point for lung, For any lung concern, upper back pain.

UB14: Back shu point of Pericardium, can use to treat both Pericardium as well as Liver, chest pain, liver Qi Stagnation. 

UB15: Back shu point of heart, tonify heart Qi, calm shen, palpitation, feeling tightness of chest.

UB17: Great point for rebellious Qi, Influential point for blood, nourish and move blood.

UB18: Back shu point of liver, helps to move Liver Qi, for eye concern, low back pain, hypochondriac discomfort. 

UB20: Back shu point of Spleen, tonify Spleen Qi, drain damp, low back pain.

UB21: Back shu point of stomach, Great for digestion. 

UB22: Back shu of Triple Warmer, Drain Dampness.

UB23: Back shu point for Kidney, tonify Kidney Qi, lower back pain, night sweating, soreness and weakness of knees. 

UB25: Back shu point of Large Intestine, back pain, Bowel concern.

UB27: Back shu point for small Intestine, low backache.

UB36: Commonly used in sciatica or any type of nerve pain.

UB39: upper He-sea point of Triple Warmer,  drain damp.

UB40: Key and command point for lower back ,any bladder concern, paralysis of lower limb, sciatica, disorder of knee joint, skin disease, dandruff, hair loss, excess sweating during sleep, piles, constipation, Excessive bite of mosquito. 

UB42: Outer back shu point for lung, clear heat, door to the corporeal soul, helps to turn inward, depression, anxiety. 

UB43: (DANGEROUS POINT) ,Outer back shu for Pericardium,  upper back pain, scapular pain, nourish the lung, calm shen, nourish heart, tonify Spleen, Stomach, Kidney.

UB44: Outer back shu point for heart, clear heat and heart fire, calm shen, mental restlessness, anxiety, depression, Insomnia. 

UB47: Outer back shu point for liver, clear heat from Liver, it works on Ethereal soul, depression, Blurred vision, nightmares, dream disturb sleep.

UB49: Outer Back shu point for Spleen, worry.

UB52: Outer back shu point for Kidney, tonify Kidney Qi,Yang and Jing, it is the house of will power.

UB57: Local pain, calf pain, cramps, strengthen the Spleen, Stomach, Liver, any disease of stomach. 

UB60: Local pain, eye pain, bulging eye, occipital headache, sciatica, neck pain, PROHIBITED IN PREGNANCY. 

UB61: Ankle pain, Mania. 

UB62: It brings excess heat and wind to down, clear heat from head, expel wind, Epilepsy(day time), ankle pain, pain along the spine. 

UB67: Prohibited in pregnancy, Promote labour, retention of placenta, malposition of fetus.

Kidney Channel.

Function of kidney organ:- 

- Governs bones, cartilage and head hair.

- Regulates the bone growth and teeth. 

- Stores essence and are thus responsible for growth, development and the reproductive function. 

- Promote new life.

- Responsible for water metabolism and control of the body fluids. 

- opens to the ear.

Polarity: Yin.

Number of points- 27.

Element- Water. 

Commonly used points on kidney channel:-

K1.- Foot pain, heel pain, toes pain, it brings heat down, hot flashes, nourish the eyes.

K3- Tonify kidneys, weakness in knee, lower back, eliminate heat from the channel. 

K6- Local pain, tonify Kidney Yin, night time seizures. 

K7-It is mother Acupoints on water channel so it is very good tonification point, tonify Kidney yang, Regulate sweating with Acupoints SI3, H6,  Regulate water passage especially in the case of Edema. 

K9- Clear heat, transform phlegm, mental emotional condition, manic depressive disorder, tongue flicking. 

K10- It is regulatory Acupoint, drain damp heat, very effective in Kidney stones, general itching, alarm point for bladder infection., knee pain.

K12- Nourish essence.

K27- shock and fear.

Sanjiao channel.

 Sanjiao channel is also called Triple Warmer or Triple Burner. 

Sanjiao means "Three Body Cavities ".

Some commonly used Acupoints on this channel:-

SJ2: clears the heat from head and face, red eyes, deafness, tinnitus, bleeding gums. 

SJ 3: Temporal headache, any ear concern, sinus, ear blockage.

SJ4: Wrist pain.

SJ5: release exterior pathogens, arthritis of fingers. 

SJ6: helps to move Qi in lower warmer, constipation, painful menstruation, hypochondriac pain.

SJ10: Local pain, Phlegm cough.

SJ14: shoulder pain.

SJ17: Bells palsy,  trigeminal neuralgia.

SJ23: pacify internal wind, mania, Epilepsy. 

PERICARDIUM CHANNEL

 Pericardium is the protector of Heart.

Heart and the Pericardium are associated with the brain and its functions. 

Polarity- Yin.

Number of points- 9.

Element- Fire.

Clinical uses : 

- Disease along the course of the channel. 

- Heart disease. 

- Disorder of upper abdomen. 

- Mental disorder.

Uses of Acupoints on the Pericardium channel:-

PC1 - any breast concern, rib pain, Palpitation, Cardiac pain, chronic cough, suffocation. 

PC2: Cardiac pain, arm pain, chest pain, Palpitation. 

PC3:- Hand tremors, cool the blood, clear heat from heart and blood, any skin condition, vomiting, Cardiac pain.

PC4:- remove blood Stagnation, Palpitation, Anxiety, Epilepsy, vomiting blood.

PC5:- alternating chills and fever, febrile disease, chest pain,  phlegm in mind, manic depression, clear heat .

PC6:- Cammander point for heart and stomach, Calm shen, for any deep seated emotion, opens the chest, irritability, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, neck ache, numbness of arm.

PC7:- Local pain, calm shen, heart fire, phlegm fire, bad breath, febrile disease, BROKEN HEART.

PC8:- Clears heat, bad breath, Anxiety, cardiac pain.

PC9:- Fainting, fever, Cardiac pain, Palpitation, stiffness of tongue.

Function of Small intestine channel

 Functions of small Intestine organ:-

- Separate the essence from food and transport of waste to the Large Intestine. 

Small Intestine channel:-

Polarity: Yang

Number of points- 19

Element:- fire

Clinical uses:- 

- Disease along the course of the channel. 

- Ear disorder.

- Eye disorder. 

- stiff neck

- sore throat 

- disorder of small Intestine. 

-  Breast disorder. 

Clinical uses of Acupoints on Small Intestine channel: 

SI 1 : For excess condition, heat in eyes/ear/nose.

Insufficient lactation .

SI3: Hand pain, lumber pain, discomfort in scapula,  neck pain.

SI4 and SI5 - Wrist pain.

SI6: For acute pain along the pathway of channel.

SI8: Elbow pain. 

SI9:- Shoulder  pain, frozen shoulder. 

SI11:- For any chest or breast concern, insufficient lactation. 

SI17: sore throat. 

SI19- Ear ache, ear infection, tinnitus, deafness.

Acupoints for Knee Pain.

 Causes:

- Kidney deficiency: Knees are influenced by kidney energy. Pain is usually bilateral and develops are gradually over a long period of time. Knees feel weak and possibly cold. These type of pains are not affected by weather and knees wouldn't be swollen. 

- Pathogenic factors: Pain is more often unilateral and starts suddenly. Its is definitely affected by weather, usually worse in rainy weather, knee may be swollen. 

- Local Stagnation of Qi and blood from over use of joint.

PAIN ABOVE THE KNEES:-

St34. - It removes the obstruction from the channel.

PAIN ON THE LATERAL SIDE OF KNEE.

Pain in this area affects the Gallbladder and Stomach channel. It is usually associated with stiffness of the knee and difficulty in bending. 

Local points can be use: St36, GB 34, GB33

PAIN ON INNER SIDE:

Pain in this area affects the Spleen and Liver channel. 

Local points:- Sp9, Liv7, Liv8.

Liver Blood Deficiency

 Symptoms:- 

- Slight hypochondrial pain and distenion.

- Insomnia.

-Dizziness 

-Moddiness.

- Premenstrual tension.

-Tingling of limbs.

- Blurred vision .

- Scanty period or  amenorrhea.

- Tiredness.

- Depression.

Tongue - pale and thin

Pulse- Choppy or fine.

Acupoints can be used:-

St36, Sp6, Ren4, liv8- Nourish the liver blood.

Liv14, Gb34, liv3- move the liver blood.

P6- moves the liver Qi and calm the mind.
